Greenhouse Community Church Profile
Greenhouse Community Church (GCC) is a ministry of the Christian and Missionary
Alliance located in west Houston, Texas. We are seeking a man to serve as lead Pastor to
this congregation, continuing the reach of God’s Kingdom, one heart at a time.
The former Pastor resigned in July 2022, and since then we have been working with the
Alliance South Central District to move forward in healthy ways. In July 2023 an interim
Pastor was brought on to serve the congregation through this season of healing and
renewal. This interim Pastor remains in place to assist with the transition for the next
lead Pastor.
Our mission is to love God supremely and others sacrificially, making disciples who are
fully devoted and joyful followers of Jesus Christ. We desire to introduce people to
Jesus, to see them flourish spiritually, and to see them become mature in the faith by
God’s power and for his glory.
Our vision is to be a community in which the love we have for one another
demonstrates that we are Jesus’ disciples, and that Jesus was sent by the Father.
Congregation
Greenhouse has approximately 100 people who attend regularly or frequently, 30 of
whom are members. Sunday morning attendance averaged 110-120 prior to Covid, and
had reached that level again prior to the pastor’s resignation. Since then attendance has
been in the range of 60-70.
Houston is an international city represented by people groups from across the globe.
The congregation at GCC is likewise ethnically diverse. Approximately 49% are white,
29% are black, 19% are Hispanic, and 3% are Asian. We desire to reflect our
neighborhood, which according to the 2020 Census is 24% white, 17% black, 43%
Hispanic, and 11% Asian. Approximately 27% of the congregation are foreign-born,
coming from countries such as Angola, Cameroon, DR Congo, Nigeria, Colombia,
Mexico, Peru, Venezuela, and others.
With respect to age, approximately one third of the congregation are children and two
thirds are adults. About 56 adults are married and 11 are single.
We have a core group of mature and maturing Christians who are trying to cultivate
authentic Christian community and make disciples. We have a number of people who
attend regularly but are not engaged in the church community, and a number who only
attend occasionally. We have visitors almost every Sunday.
Ministries
We gather on Sunday mornings at 9:30 and 11:00 for a one hour worship service. The
early service is provided so that those who serve in children’s ministry at the 11:00 hour
or those who have midday commitments such as work can worship every Sunday. Prior
to Covid we had musicians and singers who led worship from the front. Post Covid we
are using music videos. The music selections are primarily contemporary, with emphasis
on praise, but hymns are also used. The sermon of 35-40 minutes follows the music.
We believe the Bible is central to making disciples. The current children’s church
curriculum is called The Gospel Project, a three-year program that will take children
through the entire Bible in a chronological, Christ-centered manner. We have found
small group Bible studies to be the most effective discipleship tool for adults. We have
used the Alpha Course to introduce non-Christians and immature Christians to the
basics of the faith. Next comes The Story by Randy Frazee, a 31 week survey of the
entire Bible. Alpha and The Story are offered more or less continuously every year. We
currently offer five in-depth Bible studies during the week, four in person and one via
Zoom.
We hold prayer meetings in person on Sunday and Tuesday and via Zoom on
Wednesday.
We also have actively growing Men’s and Women’s ministries, as well as a Middle/High
school program. These ministries in particular serve to not only strengthen and mature
disciples in GCC, but also are an evangelistic reach into the community bringing more
visitors to come, taste and see that the Lord is good.
Missions
Greenhouse has an active Alliance Women ministry that meets monthly to pray for
international workers and contribute financially and in other ways. We participate in
hosting international workers on tours arranged by the District at least once a year.
Financial support for the Great Commission Fund is usually in excess of $20,000 per
year. Since 1986 our church has contributed over $1,782,000 to the Great Commission
Fund. We also support Operation Christmas Child each year and prepare around 150
shoeboxes. Part of our mission is to reach unbelievers and the un-churched in our
community. Large apartment complexes in the immediate vicinity of the church have
been built in the last few years and present a great outreach opportunity for our church.
Leadership
In accordance with New Testament practice, the church is led by a team of elders.
Currently we have three elders, with the Senior Pastor being an elder and serving as
chairman of the governance authority. (This position and role are currently being
satisfied by the interim Pastor). We also have a Board of Ministries inclusive of ministry
team leaders, deacons, and deaconesses which meets with the Elder Board monthly for a
cohesive unity and trajectory for the vision and mission of GCC.
Spiritual Situation
In an attempt to provide a sense of the state of the congregation, the following
information may be helpful. The leadership and some of the core group are clear that
our mission is to make disciples and are actively involved in the process. As part of the
Christian & Missionary Alliance, we are committed to doctrinal orthodoxy and the
ongoing work of the Holy Spirit given of Christ for equipping the saints for Gospel
ministry. This labor carries on Jesus’ work of Saving, Healing, and Sanctifying - all in
preparation for His Return as King. We are united on doctrinal essentials and give
freedom in non-essentials such as eschatology. Our church is welcoming to newcomers
and open to those of diverse backgrounds. We have a real love and concern for
children.
On the other hand, God has been us sending people who are not believers or have been
previously unchurched. As a result, the congregation is not as biblically literate as in the
past. We have also had many people profess faith in Christ in recent years. There is an
opportunity to improve immediate follow-up and discipleship of these newly professing
believers. Our focus going forwards needs to be on effectively engaging those who are
new believers or new to GCC with others in the community.
We have also attracted many people who come from difficult backgrounds and/or are
not disciples in any real sense. Unfortunately, many have experienced divorce or are
having marital problems. A number have addictions of one sort or another. It is a
considerable challenge to get to know these people and encourage them. Many of the
children in children’s church attend inconsistently, and some have special needs which
are an additional challenge.
Church History
The first Christian and Missionary Alliance church in Houston formed downtown in 1936.
Within ten years the church moved to the Montrose area near downtown. In 1978
property was purchased in what was at the time far west Houston. This was during the
era of Houston’s growth west along I-10 and the beginnings of the Energy Corridor.
The new sanctuary was completed in 1980 and a Family Life Center in 1992. Attendance
grew to almost 225 during the late 1990s due in significant part to transfer growth from
Alliance families moving to Houston. Attendance slowly declined since then.
In 2012, a developer’s offer to buy the property for townhome development prompted
consideration of the suitability and condition of the church facilities as well as our role in
the neighborhood. It was decided to move to a developing neighborhood between
Houston and Katy. The congregation met in temporary locations for three years during
which we slowly added members from our target area but overall attendance declined.
We moved into our new facilities in April 2016. Overall attendance increased somewhat
and then plateaued. In July 2017 our pastor resigned, and in August 2017 Hurricane
Harvey extensively flooded the area around the church as well as the homes of a
number of our families. During the last months of 2017 attendance was in the 40-50
range.
Our next pastor (who resigned in 2022) was hired as pastor in December 2017 and
attendance began to grow. Since that time many of the people who have come to us
are unbelievers, unchurched believers, or people looking for a smaller, more personal
church experience. When the decision to move to Greenhouse Road was taken we were
a predominately Anglo congregation, but we have been blessed to welcome people of
other ethnicities and nationalities into our fellowship. It is our desire to minister to and
reflect the community in west Houston.
Throughout our existence the church has supported overseas missions through the
Great Commission Fund and through prayer. At the end of the Viet Nam conflict many
Vietnamese and Hmong families were supported by us and enabled to begin new lives
in Houston. The church has planted eight churches over the course of its history. We
initiated a church planting effort around 2007 that resulted in four new congregations,
one of which is still active. We still aspire to plant new churches although we are not
able to do so at present.

States. Over the last decade Houston experienced the second highest population
growth in the country.
Facility
The Greenhouse Community Church facilities are situated on 7 acres in a growing
residential and business neighborhood in west Houston. The location is on a prominent
corner of Greenhouse Road at Saums Road, one mile north of Interstate Highway 10. A
recent traffic survey indicated that 80,000 vehicles pass the property each day.
A 23,000 ft2 building was completed in March 2016. It consists of a worship center
which seats approximately 300; a children’s wing with 5 classrooms along with infant
and toddler nurseries; and 3 meeting rooms for adult activities. There is an office wing
with a pastor’s office, church reception area/secretary’s office, and two other staff
offices. The facilities also include a community hall, kitchen, youth room and various
storage rooms throughout the facility. All areas of the building are joined via a lobby
which serves as a central gathering point. The developed area of the property covers 4
of the 7 acres, allowing room for future expansion if desired.
Finances
The church currently operates on an annual budget of about $200,000. Income and
expenses are roughly equal, with income exceeding expenses in three of the last five
years. Approximately $210,000 is held in restricted accounts, including $60,000 that may
be required to install a left turn lane on Greenhouse Road and $15,000 for emergencies.
The church has no debt. We contribute 8% of general income to the Alliance South
Central District as required. Contributions to the Great Commission Fund are kept
separate from church revenues and are forwarded to the Alliance each month.
The Senior Pastor’s compensation package will include salary, housing allowance,
medical insurance, and other professional allowances and reimbursements.
